"Why Are You Gay?" or sometimes rendered as "Why Are You Gae?" is a key phrase from a notable interview on homosexuality that was broadcast by Ugandan TV channel NBS TV in 2012. The phrase continued to circulate as a viral video and, by 2019, aspects of the broadcast were transformed into various remixes and image macro memes.
The meme originated from a broadcast on December 18th, 2012, during an episode of the English-language morning show Morning Breeze by Ugandan TV channel NBS TV. LGBT rights activist Pepe Julian Onziema, host Simon Kaggwa Njala, and pastor Martin Ssempa participated in the debate. Shortly after the broadcast, on December 20th, 2012, the interview was uploaded to YouTube by user Swalz. Although the original video has been removed and accumulated over 410,000 views, a complete version of the interview can be found on YouTube uploaded by user Seprewa. The iconic question "Why are you gay?" is posed by host Simon Kaggwa Njala early in the interview, setting the stage for its meme popularity.[1]
