The 'Who Wants Change? Who Wants to Change?' meme originates from a two-panel cartoon. The first panel features a United Nations speaker asking an audience, "Who wants to live in a better world?" to which the audience responds by enthusiastically raising their hands. The second panel shows the speaker asking, "Who is willing to abandon unrestrained consumption?" which leads to the audience lowering their hands and looking away. This comic is typically modified in memes to point out the irony in people's desire for change without wanting to make personal sacrifices.
The meme began on June 21st, 2012 when the Brazilian magazine Hoje em Dia published the original cartoon by Brazilian artist Lute. The artist subsequently uploaded it to his blog on June 25th, 2012. Over time, various iterations and translations of the cartoon spread across the internet, simplifying the original message to 'Who wants change? Who wants to change?' A notable spike in its popularity occurred when a translated version was shared on 9GAG on December 23rd, 2014. Additionally, the change management blog Change Activation featured a remastered variant of the cartoon on January 24th, 2015, including both two-panel and GIF versions.[1]
