"There is no war in Ba Sing Se" is a sarcastic phrase originating from the 2005 American animated television show Avatar: the Last Airbender. This phrase is typically used to imply that a statement is obviously untrue.

OriginWho did it first?

The phrase "There is no war in Ba Sing Se" first appeared in the 14th episode of the second season of Avatar: The Last Airbender, titled "City of Walls and Secrets", which aired in 2006. In this episode, Jet, a character and drifter acquainted with the main protagonists, is involved in a brawl in a tea shop, disrupting the feigned tranquility within the city. Afterwards, he is captured by the secretive city officials of Ba Sing Se and subjected to brainwashing. During this process, a revolving hypnotic lamp is shown as a city official repeats the line, "There is no war in Ba Sing Se," to enforce denial of the ongoing external conflict.[1]
